Players still need to make thoughtful choices about which supports to use and how to synergize them with their overall build. Furthermore, because the new system allows skill gems to grow and be customized over time, there’s a deeper sense of investment and progression in each gem.
Another benefit is that players can now manage their skills more consistently across characters and playthroughs. Since the gem setups are independent of gear, players can develop ideal skill configurations and transfer them across builds or even into the early stages of a new character, encouraging experimentation without the usual penalty of unreliable item drops.
The changes also open the door to more interesting skill interactions. Because developers no longer need to balance support gems around gear constraints, they have more room to innovate with new types of supports—whether they manipulate damage, add utility effects, or modify casting mechanics in creative ways.
