Niclosamide 500 mg is a medication primarily used to treat parasitic infections in humans. It belongs to the anthelmintic class of drugs, which are specifically designed to target and eliminate parasitic worms. Niclosamide is particularly effective against tapeworm infections, including both intestinal tapeworms (such as Taenia species) and fish tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium latum).
Intestinal tapeworm infections can occur through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, where the tapeworm larvae develop into adult worms in the intestines. Fish tapeworm infections, on the other hand, often result from consuming raw or undercooked fish containing the larvae.
Niclosamide works by interfering with the energy production (oxidative phosphorylation) of the tapeworms, leading to their paralysis and eventual expulsion from the body through bowel movements. It is usually administered orally in tablet form and is effective in treating both adult tapeworms and their larvae.
Apart from its use in humans, Niclosamide is also utilized in veterinary medicine to treat parasitic infections in animals, demonstrating its broad spectrum of anthelmintic activity.
